Overview
Humanin was discovered in 2001 as a neuroprotective factor in surviving brain tissue of Alzheimer's patients. Circulating levels decline with age and are higher in children of centenarians.
Mechanism of action
Binds FPRL1 and a CNTFR/WSX-1/gp130 receptor complex; inhibits BAX-mediated apoptosis.
